Nero Multimedia Suite 10 Available Nero Vision Xtra, Nero Burning ROM and Nero BackItUp & Burn

The next iteration of the Nero Suite is available for pre-orders at a discount. Nero Multimedia Suite 10 is designed as a bundle of three products, namely Nero Vision Xtra, Nero Burning ROM and Nero BackItUp & Burn. Customers that will pre-order the Suite will be able to take advantage of the special offer set up by Nero, and pay just $79.99, enjoying a $20 instant rebate. According to current general availability plans, Nero Multimedia Suite 10 will hit store shelves worldwide come April 12th, 2010. According to Nero, when it will be offered through the retail channel, the suite will feature a price tag of $99.99.

"During Nero's fifteen years in business, more than 300 million customers have enjoyed using Nero's product offerings to manage their content at home, on-the-go and online," J邦rgen Kurz, CEO, Nero AG, said. "Nero Multimedia Suite 10 was developed using extensive market research and incorporating the feedback from over 150,000 consumers and home hobbyists."

With Nero Vision Xtra, the company is offering customers the marriage of Nero MediaHub and Nero Vision. Specifically, Vision Xtra is designed to act as a multimedia hub, offering customers not just playback, but also management and editing capabilities. AVCHD, MKV, FLV, FLAC, DVD, non-commercial Blu-ray, MPEG-4 AVC, (S)-VCD, AVCREC, audio CDs are among the audio, video and photo formats supported by the tool. Vision Xtra also allows users to publish multimedia projects to CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, but at the same time it hooks into the Cloud and enables sharing across a variety of social-networking communities, such as YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, and Flickr. In addition, the company boasts a high level of HD performance for Nero Vision, especially for projects involving SmartEncoding for MPEG 2 and AVCHD. Moreover, Vision Xtra comes with NVIDIA CUDA support, a detail designed to allow customers to take advantage of high-performance, hardware-accelerated H.264/AVC encoding.

Of course it wouldn't be a Nero Suite without the "heart" of the company's software solutions, namely Nero Burning ROM, which features support for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. In addition to burning and copying capabilities, Nero Burning ROM now brings to the table SecurDisc 2.0, a technology designed to boost reliability, security and integrity of burned content, and ultimately the lifespan of user-made media. With the latest version of the product, Nero Burning ROM is also capable of burning AVCHD for DVDs and AVCHD / BD-MV for Blu-ray Discs.

"The feedback showed that existing &all-in-one' offerings in the market are considered outdated and work more like Swiss army knives, being the 'jack of all trades and the master of none'. As a result, Nero set out to create a true multimedia suite that offers separate, best-of-breed products dedicated to video creation and management, burning and backup. Nero Multimedia Suite 10 not only meets the needs of today's customers, it also provides an incredible value," Kurz added.

The last major piece in the Nero Multimedia Suite 10 bundle available is Nero BackItUp & Burn. The data-protection solution offers, as the label implies, backup and recovery capabilities. According to the company, Nero BackItUp & Burn is capable of safeguarding files even in the eventuality of hard drive crashes, system failures and malware infections. And the another tool which can burn video onto DVD is DVD Creator, the Mac version is Mac DVD Creator. In addition to plain vanilla and automatic backup functionality, Nero BackItUp & Burn can also be leveraged in scenarios in which data needs to be synchronized between computers and mobile devices.

"Tools like Nero Multimedia Suite 10 have the ability to grow the market for photo and video editing," Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst with Parks Associates, added. "Already, the percentage of consumers in U.S. broadband households that self-edit home videos on a regular basis has grown from 10 percent in 2006 to 25 percent in 2009. Today, nearly one-half of consumers are regularly editing photos, up from 35 percent in 2006."

The components of Nero Multimedia Suite 10 will also be sold as standalone products, namely Nero Vision Xtra ($59.99), Nero Burning ROM ($49.99) and Nero BackItUp & Burn ($39.99). Customers will be able to buy and download either the whole suite or individual components beginning with April 12th. Nero revealed that upgrades to Nero Multimedia Suite 10 started as low as $53.99.

Mac OS X 10.6.3 Build 10D573 Seeded to Developers

Apple is continuing its rapid-fire seeding of Mac OS X 10.6.3 builds, pushing out Build 10D573 to developers. The new build is only a single increment over the previous build issued last Thursday. World of Apple details the seed notes, which reveal that Apple has asked developers to continue focusing on GraphicsDrivers, Images & Photos, Mail, QuickTime, and Security Certificates for testing.

User posted image

The seed notes also reveal one additional fix since the last build, involving an issue with recurring events in iCal when working with Exchange servers. The new build also continues to carry a single documented known issue involving the reoffering of the Safari 4.0.5 update issued earlier this month.

At the same time, Mac DVD Ripper and Mac Video Converter also have been updated.

We have continued to expect an imminent release of Mac OS X 10.6.3, but Apple's release schedule remains unpredictable as it puts the finishing touches on the update. Late last week, an iMac user reported receiving a prerelease version of Mac OS X 10.6.3 via Software Update. That version was the previous Build 10D572, and it is unknown why the user's machine was able to access the download, although it does suggest that work on Mac OS X 10.6.3 is very close to completion.

Released as a free beta application for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and higher, the software allows Mac users to purchase and download from Amazon's growing catalog of over 450,000 eBooks without the need to purchase its $259 Kindle 2 or larger $489 Kindle DX hardware. Sony to Launch Challengers to iPad, iPhone

Sources have told the Wall Street Journal that Sony is planning on making a challenger to Apple*s iPad that will have all the capabilities of a netbook, a Sony Reader and a PSP, the company's handheld gaming device.
Sources have told the Wall Street Journal that Sony is planning on making a challenger to Apple*s iPad that will have all the capabilities of a netbook, a Sony Reader and a PSP, the company's handheld gaming device.
At a Sony news conference in Tokyo, Sony*s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda didn*t provide any details but expressed the company*s desire to compete against Apple*s newest gadget, due in stores next month.
"That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a [great] product," said Oneda. "Time-wise, we are a little behind the iPad but it's a space we would like to be an active player in.§
The WSJ also reported Sony is making a new smartphone - containing Sony Ericsson mobile technology and capable of playing PSP games - to compete against the iPhone. Both devices are expected to work with Sony Online Services, an online store due to launch in March and sell music, movies, books, and other downloadable applications for mobile products. So for the fans of sony, i think Best DVD Ripper can do a lot of things for you to enjoy your DVD on your Sony mobile devices.
The iPad challenger and the new smartphone are expected to launch sometime in 2010, but no details about specs, price or design have been released.
Sony has tried to get into the phone/gaming gadget arena in the past. A patent was filed in 2006 for a device that looked like a PSP on one side and a smartphone on the other, but such a device has never hit the market.
Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones in the last three months of 2009. The company announced Friday that the iPad will be available April 3.

Apple and Google compete at Mobile World Congress

As the battle between Apple and Google hots up at the Mobile World Congress, the smartphone boom signals good times for media firms

User posted image
Delegates browse phones are displayed at the Mobile World congress in Barcelona.

Announcing the BBC's move into the mobile phone market with its own news, sport and video applications for the iPhone last week, Erik Huggers, the director of future media and technology, said the new generation of so-called smartphones are a "great conduit to our audience".

It is a conduit that until recently has been, if not closed, then certainly constricted for media companies. But the explosion of downloadable applications, rapid rise in mobile broadband take-up and, crucially, the weakening of network operators' stranglehold on the market have opened up a massive opportunity.

The attraction is easy to see: there are already four times as many mobile phones in the world as there are PCs, and those phones are getting cleverer. In the run-up to Christmas, one in four of the phones sold by Vodafone across the world was a smartphone 每 that is, a phone with the same computing power as a laptop you could buy a few years ago. Within a couple of years there will be more smartphones than PCs on the planet.

Even the mobile phone operators' reaction to the weakening of their position, banding together in order to mount a fightback in the apps world, should benefit media companies. Then there is Google, which has not only provided the industry with a serious, and more importantly open, competitor to the iPhone, but looks increasingly likely to usher in a new era of mobile advertising.

Huggers made his announcement in Barcelona at the mobile phone industry's biggest annual get-together, Mobile World Congress, which showed that while the iPhone began the boom in the smartphone market, the rest of the industry is catching up and a range of devices are set to hit the shops that will help media players get to a mobile audience. And the important tool for mobile phone and pc users is Total Video Converter

The iPhone drove a wedge between customers and the mobile phone networks. Other players had tried it, such as Nokia, but Apple succeeded. For years the mobile phone companies acted as gatekeepers to their customers. Content companies had to strike deals with each operator, jostling for position on the "portals" created by the networks. Consumers, however, did not want their phone company picking what content they could view on their phones and portal usage was minimal.

So the networks knocked down their walled gardens. As consumers ventured into the mobile web, many media companies 每 including the BBC 每 created mobile versions of their websites that could be easily viewed on a phone's small screen. But usage remained low because even the mobile web, on many devices, was a pale imitation of the "real" internet.

The iPhone was different and when it switched to 3G technology a year and a half ago the mobile web came of age. It has weakened the networks and given media companies the chance to bypass them. The relationship an iPhone customer has is with Apple first and their network provider second. The network is merely paid for providing access 每 Apple gets paid for content. It is an aggregator for media companies worldwide, and what started with music has become a wide variety of content, thanks to its App store.

But Apple does not have the market to itself. Already more than 20 phones with Google's rival Android operating system have been produced, which have a crucial advantage over the Apple device: Android supports Flash, which should help advertisers realise the potential of the mobile web. "Crucially, Apple does not and will not support Adobe Flash on its iPhone or iPad products," explains Brad Rees, chief executive of Mediacells Limited, the mobile market experts. "From an advertising creative perspective, this has meant iPhone application specialists win most of the pitches for mobile microsites. In the online world, the language of big-budget agency creatives is Adobe Flash, and this is precisely where Android hits the sweet spot. Even though Nokia has been offering full internet phones for a while, it's the Google proposition which resonates."

In his keynote speech in Barcelona, Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Google, promised the search engine giant is "not trying to run roughshod" over the mobile phone companies or turn them into "dumb pipes" in the air. The companies, however, are not so sure. Two dozen of the world's biggest announced during the congress that they are getting together to produce a completely open apps platform 每 allowing consumers to take their applications with them when they change handsets.

In return for this portability, the networks would start to get a slice of revenues 每 although exactly how is still unclear.

This is potentially big news for media companies as it raises the possibility that they will be able eventually to develop their apps just once, and put them on a massive array of handsets straight away. And it's another indication that at long last the mobile floodgates are open.

iPad First Look

Actually, it*s not the first look, but the first touch, which is important with the iPad. Sure, it looks just beautiful, and the screen, which we*ll come back to, is glorious, but it*s when you feel it in your hand that your heart races.

The glossy 9.7-inch screen is as inviting as the iPhone*s but it*s the anodised aluminium casing which is especially tactile and pleasing. Combine this with the super-light weight and, like a page-turning novel, you don*t want to put it down. That*s what Apple*s hoping for, of course, and it has aimed to create an experience as immersive and personal as a great book.

Checking off the spec list so we can get to the feel of the device in use, and it will come in six favours: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB with Wi-Fi and the same storage sizes with Wi-Fi and 3G. The Wi-Fi models will connect via Wireless b, g, and n, and you'll get Bluetooth in there as well.

Inside and the OS is very much Apple's iPhone offering with some tweaks to cope with the larger screen. Rather than turn to Samsung or Intel for the processor, Apple has created its own custom made A4 processor running at 1GHz and promising HD playback (720p) and enough speed to make it glide along with ease. Battery life is a quoted 10 hours (which we weren't able to test).

The tech specs aren't maxed out to the hilt as you might wish. There is no built-in camera for video conferencing via iChat or Skype for example, nor is there an SD card reader for transferring photos (that's an optional dongle). You can't multitask either just like the iPhone, which is a shame given the processing power on board. You will, however, be able to output the screen to an even bigger display, get giddy with the accelerometer and do virtually all the same things you can already do with the iPhone.

User posted image

So let*s start with iBook. Steve Jobs made some play of the fact that unlike some ebook readers, the screen here is colour. That may not matter too much when you*re three chapters into "Wolf Hall", say, but it*s the details that are important.

You turn the page by tapping on the right side of the screen (left to go back). But you can also swipe your finger slowly across and an animated page will turn at exactly the same speed as your digit moves. This is as inviting and effective a transition as the first time you flipped through photos on the iPhone. Compare this to the slow and slightly alienating effect when you turn the page on the Kindle, when it flashes to a white-out-of-black image as the next page is formed and the iPad wins hands down. Of course, this needs to be considered alongside E Ink's passive technology, which is much more power efficient and is closer to reading off paper.
Video looks just lovely - even when you zoom in to full screen playback of movies like Star Trek, the result is crisp, sharp and gorgeous. Of course, purists will point out that the screen*s shape isn*t perfect widescreen so fullscreen loses part of the picture. There*s a widescreen viewing option but this leaves obtrusive black bars at the sides. and I think Best iPhone Video Converter will be useful!

As for browsing, it's the same experience as on the iPhone, which means still no Flash although Adobe says they are working on a work around in the short-term. The difference of course is that you get the whole page at once without having to zoom in. The screen is 1024 x 768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi) and that means you'll get to see most of your favourite websites like Pocket-lint without zooming when in landscape mode.

On the App front, the iPad is compatible with all the 140,000 apps already on sale in the app store with a button allowing you to scale them up to maximise the screen size. It's really clever and means you can tap into the vast array on offer. Of course there will be dedicated iPad apps as well, but it will get you started.

Unlike some LCD screens, the LED-backlit IPS technology display manages some convincing levels of contrast and deep, deep blacks. It also has a reasonably wide viewing angle so two people can watch together happily.

The processor speed is the next impressive element. It*s significantly faster than the iPhone 3GS, with instant app launches and quick responses throughout, whether you*re surfing the Net or deleting emails. Overall, the speedy responses make the iPad stand out and set the bar for other imitators to match.

User posted image

Typing isn*t the greatest experience, with no haptic feedback and no way to guide your fingers without keeping your eyes on the screen. The accessory keyboard may be a necessity if you*re eager to use this as your main carry-around computer, especially if you plan to use Apple's new app iWork which brings word processing and Keynote to the device so you can roll up to a business presentation and wow them before you've even said anything.

Games are a real delight, and should be a winning element for iPad sales. Sure, it*s a pricey portable gaming device, but once you*ve got the hardware, the titles are cheap as all-get-out. And newly optimised games like Need for Speed played beautifully and intuitively. Extra features like the rear mirror view, not found on the iPhone version, could be a mark of things to come.

So this is another fashion leading comes from Apple!
